The port of Ravenna has great potential for expansion. It covers 2,080 ha including 1,500 ha already urbanized or being urbanized and 580 ha of water surface. The commercial and industrial terminals, active in the most varied fields of commerce and able to operate 24 hrs a day all year round, are provided with 1350 ha of wharves, with storing plants, with 9 Km of quays along the canal harbour able to accomodate 90% of the current fleet and with an efficient road and rail network.

A number of factors have put Ravenna in the avant-guard of modern computer systems run port business, specialized and versatile equipment, terminals suitable for all goods type, efficient logistics, large warehouses, warehousing areas and tanks, all with excellent connections to the road/rail network. An E.D.P. system controls all the loading and unloading operations the handling and the warehousing of the goods enabling quicker and more efficient service and consequently much lower operational costs.

The quays, which extend for about 9 Km, are equipped with the most modern technology for the loading and unloading of various goods: elevators equipped with draught tubes for grains, stationary and travelling cranes for general cargo, gantry cranes and trascontainers for the handling of containers, lifting equipment, loading slides for bagged goods and countless mobile units operating in the yards. Close by the quays there are extensive areas for the warehousing of goods: the storeyards occupy about 800,000 sqm, for containers and rolling stock 415,000 sqm, the warehouses for general cargoes about 150,000 sqm and those for bulk cargoes about 1,700,000 sqm; silo capacity is about 380,000 cm for non petroliferous liquid tanks capacity is more than 300,000 cm inside the port area, many large areas and warehouses are also available altrough not equipped with quays.

The harbour terminals are well connected to the roadnet and also to the national railway by its own rialnetwork.
